Frequently asked questions

Is the family tree maker really free?

Yes. You can build, download and print as many family tree charts as you like without paying or creating an account.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Your tree is saved in your browser while you work. Create a free account if you want to keep it safe online and come back to it from any device.

How do I make a family tree for a school project?

Start with the grandparents at the top, add their children, then add yourself and your brothers and sisters. Pick a style, then download the chart as an image or print it straight onto A4 or letter paper.

Can I add ancestors above the top of the tree?

Yes. Click the person at the top of the tree and choose "Add parents" to add another generation above them. You can do the same for anyone's partner, such as your mum or your granny, so both sides of the family fit on one chart.

What formats can I download?

You can download a high-resolution PNG image, a scalable SVG file for professional printing, or print the chart directly from your browser.

Can I add photos to my family tree?

Yes. A free account has 25 MB for photos, enough for a handful of portraits. The Family plan gives you 5 GB: put a photo on each person's card, crop it to their face, and keep the rest of your family photos and videos in an album alongside the tree, with the people in each one tagged.

Is my family information private?

Charts made with the free tool never leave your device unless you choose to download or share them. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.
